India 3G Mobile Bandwidth Auction Price Hits INR79.01 Billion
The bidding for bandwidth for third-generation mobile services covering the whole of India rose almost 125.7% to INR79.01 billion ($ 1.78 billion), after a total of 76 rounds at the end of the 13th day of the auctions, the Department of Telecommunications said on its Web site Saturday.
The starting price was INR35.00 billion.
The bidding for the one available pan-India slot will start at INR80.69 billion when the auction resumes Monday, the DoT said.
Delhi continued to keep its place as the most lucrative of the 22 service areas, attracting top bids of INR10.83 billion each, with four bids for the three slots available.
Mumbai received the second-highest bid, though marginally, with two extra bidders, at INR10.80 billion for the three available slots.
The western Indian province of Maharashtra received the third-highest bid at INR7.69 billion, but got two bids for three available slots.
The south Indian province of Tamil Nadu kept its fourth position in terms of bid value. It received two bids each at INR7.47 billion for the three available slots of bandwidth.
The starting prices for Delhi, Mumbai, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu were at INR3.20 billion for each slot of bandwidth.
Telecom service areas of Assam, Orissa and Jammu & Kashmir, which found no takers in the initial rounds, continued to attract bidders, while areas of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh saw no bidders on Saturday.
The Indian government is auctioning three bandwidth slots for 3G services in each of 17 telecom service areas and four each in the remaining five areas. The successful bidders will be able to offer 3G services on a commercial basis from Sept. 1.
Nine local mobile phone operators, including Bharti Airtel Ltd. (532454.BY), Reliance Communications Ltd. (532712.BY), Vodafone Essar Ltd. and Idea Cellular Ltd. (532822.BY), are bidding for 3G bandwidth.
